On 4 June, E Ink Corporation, a leading e-paper manufacturer, unveiled an innovative in-vehicle display solution. Using the ‘e-paper electric bus’ as a use case, the solution integrates the company’s research and development achievements in electric vehicle technology, display driver IC design and e-paper display technology, making full use of e-paper both inside the vehicle and on its exterior, thereby transforming public transport into an innovative medium for conveying information.
General Manager of E Ink, expressed his gratitude for the team’s efforts, the support of partners within Taiwan’s ecosystem, and the resources provided by the public sector, which have enabled the company to jointly develop an ‘automotive e-paper driver IC’ with its partners. This has established self-sufficiency in key components and successfully extended the application scenarios of various e-paper technology platforms from fixed-location and indoor settings to mobile and vehicle-mounted applications.
E Ink’s automotive display solutions include mobile advertising billboards for vehicle exteriors powered by E Ink Prism™, rear-view direction indicator systems, a 7.3-inch E Ink Spectra 6 double-sided hanging advertising display developed for vehicle interiors, a 25.3-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 interactive bus route map, and medium-to-large-sized Spectra 6 e-paper advertising displays, meeting the display requirements for signage on various surfaces and within vehicle interiors.
A comprehensive in-vehicle display solution has now been introduced into live service on the Red 26 bus route in New Taipei City. This project replaces paper and LCD display devices used for advertisements or notices with e-paper, thereby not only reducing paper consumption and the costs associated with manual replacement, but also lowering the energy consumption of the in-vehicle display system. Combined with the low-carbon transport characteristics of electric buses, this further promotes the development of green transport and helps the city move towards its sustainable transport goals.
E-paper features ultra-low power consumption, drawing power only when the screen is refreshed, thereby meeting the requirements of electric vehicles for low-energy devices. In the context of long-hour bus operations, it not only maintains a stable display but also prioritises energy for the vehicle’s propulsion, delivering real-time information without compromising driving range. Furthermore, the non-backlit nature of e-paper reduces visual distraction, providing a more comfortable passenger experience.
