E Ink has unveiled a new generation of e-paper control chip architecture, enabling smoother video playback on large-format e-paper displays

With the T2000 colour e-paper timing control chip at its core, E Ink has unveiled a new generation of e-paper control chip architecture, thereby enhancing the smooth playback of videos on large-format e-paper displays. When used in retail advertising displays, it enables the synchronised playback of advertising footage.

Following optimisation of the control chip architecture, the 75-inch E Ink Kaleido e-paper display can now show dynamic images across half the screen (equivalent to a resolution of 5120 × 1440) at a frame rate of 11 fps (frames per second). This represents a nearly threefold improvement over previous models, significantly reducing refresh times. Furthermore, when displaying partial animations on the 75-inch display (at a resolution of approximately 1760 × 2400), the display performance can reach up to 13 fps.

The new-generation architecture optimises data processing workflows, ensuring that image transmission and display no longer follow a single path but can operate simultaneously. Whilst displaying the current frame, the system can prepare the next frame, effectively enhancing display efficiency and refresh rates.

 

E Ink states that this advancement, enabled by the new architecture, equips e-paper with the capability to support dynamic video playback. This accelerates the transition from static displays to dynamic playback applications, particularly benefiting e-paper displays in retail and public information settings, where it opens up new possibilities for presenting brand content and public information. Furthermore, this development can be extended to consumer devices, resulting in more intuitive and fluid system operation.
