It features a 4.26-inch E-Ink touchscreen with a resolution of 800 × 480 and a pixel density of 220 PPI; It features 10 built-in LED front lights with adjustable colour temperature, ensuring a comfortable reading experience whether in bright daylight or low-light conditions at night.
In terms of hardware, this device is designed as a lightweight reading device, powered by an ESP32-S3 dual-core microcontroller and equipped with 8 MB of RAM and 16 MB of on-board flash memory. Book files can be stored on a MicroSD card, whilst the device also supports wireless file transfer via Wi-Fi. The firmware natively supports the two mainstream e-book formats, TXT and ePub, meeting basic reading requirements. Unlike standard e-readers, it is fitted with a removable 800mAh battery, allowing users to replace the battery themselves without having to send the entire device in for repair.
The device’s standout feature is that both its software and hardware are entirely open-source, with all relevant documentation made available under an open-source licence. The enthusiast community is free to modify and customise the firmware, whilst users can adapt the device’s functions to suit their own needs, offering far greater flexibility than closed-system e-readers such as the Kindle.
In terms of pricing, the standard version of the Open Book Touch is priced at US$149 via crowdfunding, which is slightly lower than the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, which retails at US$159. In addition to the cost of the device, international orders incur an additional US$12 for global shipping, whilst purchases within the US are exempt from shipping costs; however, import duties and relevant sales taxes will apply upon delivery. There is also an ‘Author Edition’ with a customised casing, priced at US$249.
